About

Kagyu Samye Dzong Randburg forms part of Kagyu Africa Tibetan Buddhist Centers. There are many other centers world wide and throughout Europe and 6 other centers in Africa. These centers include: Kensington, home to the The Kagyu Samye Dzong Johannesburg Temple, Pretoria, Tara Rokpa Centre (our retreat Centre) , Cape Town Samye Dzong, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kagyu Samye Ling was founded in 1967 by Akong Tulku Rinpoche on the banks of the River Esk in Scotland, and was the first Tibetan Buddhist center established in the West. The African centers have been active since the early 1970s, with Rob Nairn serving as Akong Rinpoche’s representative in Africa until 2023. Today, all activities are carried out under the guidance of Abbot Choje Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche.

Throughout the year, our center offers a range of online and face to face programs including weekly meditation sessions and courses exploring Buddhism, compassion, therapy, dreams, and stress relief — all oriented toward helping people live happier, more peaceful lives. The center warmly welcomes both Buddhists and non-Buddhists.
